Gatwick inches closer to 40m passengers per year

Gatwick Airport is edging ever closer to reaching the 40-million-passenger-per-year mark after a very busy August.

4.53 million passengers passed through the airport last month, a 3.7% increase on last year, and means Gatwick has experienced 30 months of consecutive growth.

Last month’s passenger numbers push the airport’s rolling 12-month passenger total to almost 39.5 million – a record the Airports Commission predicted wouldn’t happen until 2024!

Travel to North Atlantic destinations continues to be a significant contribution to the increased passenger numbers, with flights to Orlando seeing a 13.3% increase in passengers. Overall, passenger numbers on North Atlantic routes were up 9.5%, while traffic to Ireland rose by 8.1% and passengers travelling on scheduled European services increased by 5.5%.

In a rolling 12-month period (July 2014 – August 2015), passengers numbers increased by 5.9% when compared with the previous 12-month period.
